As AI is on the fast cusp, Open AI’s founder Sam Altman visits India tomorrow 5th Feb. It will be his second visit in two years and, for sure an important one given DeepSeek and the threat looming large over AI domination by OpenAI.Altman’s visit is going to be a pretty high-profile event since he is meeting the high-ups in government and is speaking at a fireside chat here in New Delhi. Sources state that during this visit, Altman would also meet key stakeholders for collaboration possibilities which may also further open avenues for Open AI presence in the country. Now, with DeepSeek appearing as this new low-cost AI model competitor, this visit is a good time for OpenAI since already, R1 has made waves all over the world at large. With an estimated construction cost of $6 million to deploy this model by DeepSeek, it would surely be the game-changer in the AI world by amounts of digested information at costs that are mere fractions of what the present popular models, like ChatGPT, are commanding today.DeepSeek has shaken the whole technological world to the very core as it has dented the staggering market capitalization losses of this AI-related issue to chip maker NVidia to an astonishing $590 billion. The investment in AI and its fears had also been risen; billions have been raised for AI research purposes by pouring in millions. This puts into perspective the visit of Altman. India has been a pro-active pursuer of its AI agenda. The government stated an idea for building a sovereign AI model, capable of rivaling the one that’s prevailing currently in the world. The government also unveiled plans to bring in a highly affordable AI model for less than Rs 100 an hour. That is a quarter of what global players launched AI model with.“I am excited to see how the artificial intelligence landscape is rapidly changing. It’s great to know that Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is coming to India to look into the possibilities of working there. This is a good sign for India, becoming an important player in the AI ecosystem.I am aware of their pain points, but I also know this is a growing phase. The low-cost AI model R1 through Deep Seek has really rocked the status quo, and the traditional players in this AI space have no choice but to be agile and quick. As a student, I would love to see how this pans out. Although I am very much attracted to the idea of having affordable AI models at reasonable prices, the associated risks and challenges make me worried about easy accessibility.Hence, for me, future AI is really only for a few people – those who might have a blend of innovation with responsibility. What a momentous role for AI engineers like myself to change the future into something real, so I look forward to seeing AI’s contribution with the growing India AI ecosystem on the global conversational platform. The minimum, at least the next two to three years are very exciting for fans like me and indeed for those dreaming of future Artificial Intelligence capabilities to be materialized. Spearhead this move in Open AI Deepseek India-AI: Many trailblazers on innovations with earth-shaking discoveries will have effects on human nature and social functioning.” – Nitesh OpenAI also views Altman’s visit as also the channel through which it wants to have an intense bonding with the country and tap into the still-emerging ecosystem for AI in the country. The company already tied up with Japanese technology giant SoftBank for launching SB OpenAI Japan, a 50:50 joint venture whose principal aim is to promote AI research and development.Despite all this, OpenAI is facing some challenges in this regard. Cases have come forward against the company stating copyright breaches, and the court has moved against it. Since it has already been stated that its data was sourced only from the public domain, the case remains contentious. And the fallout of this visit by Altman, all excited to meet the officials and industry players of India, will bring every enthusiast anxiously waiting on the edge of their seats. Will OpenAI be able to do it? Increase its presence in India and discover this booming ecosystem of AI? Only time will tell. Stay updated with the latest news.
