Shocking the entire world, “Friends” star Matthew Perry, aged 54 years, was found dead on Saturday in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home.
Mayank Jha, a die-hard fan of FRIENDS from Dehradun, sadly expressed to TTL, “I’ve been a fan of Chandler since as long as I can remember and watching him pass away is like living a nightmare.” Could Chandler Bing BE more funny?
Friends wouldn’t be the same without Chandler Bing. If you’re a part of the Friends fandom, you know what I’m talking about. Chandler’s humour is all about sarcasm. He’s the king of witty one-liners and clever comebacks. He’s open about his own quirks and insecurities. We can relate to that because, let’s face it, we’ve all been there. His self-deprecating humour is a reminder that it’s okay to laugh at our own shortcomings.
Let’s honour Matthew Perry by reliving some of Chandler’s funniest lines in the show!
1.Hi. I’m Chandler Bing. I make jokes when I’m uncomfortable.
2.When I was younger, I started using humour as a defence mechanism.
3.Until I was 25, I thought that the only response to ‘I love you’ Was ‘Oh, crap!
4.I’m not so good with the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?
5.You have to stop the q-tip when there’s resistance!
6.If I were a guy and…did I just say ‘if I were a guy?’
7.What must it be like not to be crippled by fear and self-loathing?
8 Oh, that makes me feel so warm in my hollow, tin chest.
9. SHUT UP. SHUT UP. SHUT UP.
10.Why yes Ross, pressing my third nipple. It opens the delivery entrance to the magical land of Narnia.
When asked what’s that one line by Chandler than you can relate to the most, Ashkrit Sharma, a 21-year-old friends fan based in Delhi, replied to TTL, “Oh it’s definitely ‘I say more dumb things before 9 A.M. than most people say all day.’ He jokingly said, “Self-acceptance is the key, you know.” Saket Chauhan, a 20-year-old from Delhi, while answering to the same question, told TTL, “When I first meet somebody it’s usually panic, anxiety, and a great deal of sweating.” He said, “Being an introvert, this is my life’s slogan.” TTL asked Riya Shrivastava, a 22-year-old friends fan from Patna, what her favourite thing about Chandler is, to which she answered, “Everyone talks about how funny chandler is, and which he is, but my favourite part is definitely his character development throughout the show. Season 1 Chandler fears commitment and cannot even hold a relationship with Janice. But after he falls in love with Monica, it’s so beautiful to see him overcome his fear of relationships, and eventually becoming the most perfect husband and father.” Behind the sarcastic personality of Chandler Bing who screamed “I’m hopeless and awkward and desperate for love” there was also a person who had several ups and downs in his life. Bing’s drug addiction- The not-so-funny moments of his life
In his book, ‘Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing’; Matthew Perry opened up about his drug addiction. While promoting his book, perry revealed in an interview that he has not re-watched the sitcom because of how he viewed his addiction. He said, “I can’t watch the show, because I was brutally thin and being beaten down so badly by the disease. I could tell season by season by how I looked, and I don’t think anybody else can, but I certainly could. That’s why I don’t want to watch it because that’s what I see—that’s what I notice when I watch it.” Matthew Perry started his battle with drug addiction after he had a skiing accident on the movie set of ‘When Fools Rush In’ in 1997. The doctor prescribed the drug for his pain, but as it’s a highly addictive substance, Perry’s use escalated to taking 55 pills. Along with the Vicodin addiction, he suffered from alcoholism. His Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston confronted Perry about his drinking habits on the set of the classic sitcom. “‘I know you’re drinking,’ she said,” he wrote. “To be confronted by Jennifer Aniston was devastating. And I was confused.” He added that the cast was always supportive by saying that they were understanding, and they were patient. “It’s like penguins. Penguins, in nature, when one is sick, or when one is very injured, the other penguins surround it and prop it up. They walk around it until that penguin can walk on its own. That’s kind of what the cast did for me.” He then went on to write, “I was the injured penguin, but I was determined to not let these wonderful people, and this show, down,”
Aniston told Perry about how they found out about his drinking habits. “‘We can smell it,’ she said, in a kind of weird but loving way, and the plural ‘we’ hit me like a sledgehammer,” he recounted.
In writing his memoir, Perry talked about how he needed to be in a safe place in life to write his experiences. “I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again,” he says in a cover story for People. “I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober— and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction — to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people.” The one where we say Goodbye!
Chandler Bing, with his quick wit and unforgettable one-liners, became a friend to us all. Matthew’s portrayal gave Chandler a depth and humanity that was impossible not to connect with.
As we mourn Matthew’s passing, in our hearts, he will forever be the guy who made us smile when we needed it most.
Though he may no longer be with us, his memory and the joy he brought to our lives will live on throughout the 10 seasons and 236 episodes of FRIENDS.
