The Bollywood film industry has been rocked by a series of chilling death threats against two of its biggest stars, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. The alarming incidents have sparked widespread concern and prompted swift action from law enforcement agencies.
Salman Khan’s Ordeal
On Thursday, Salman Khan received a menacing phone call from an unknown number, demanding a staggering 50 million Indian rupees (approximately €550,000 or $592,600). The caller claimed to represent Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious gangster currently behind bars since 2015. Bishnoi’s gang has been linked to extortion, drug smuggling, and murder.
The threat also targeted a lyricist who had penned a song referencing Salman and Bishnoi. Mumbai police have launched an investigation into the matter.
This is not the first time Salman has faced threats from Bishnoi’s gang. In 2018, the gangster objected to Salman’s alleged poaching of two blackbuck antelopes, considered sacred by the Bishnoi community.
Previous Arrest and ongoing Investigation
In a separate incident on Tuesday, police arrested Bhikha Ram, a daily wage worker from Rajasthan, for issuing a death threat to Salman Khan. Ram claimed to be a fan of Lawrence Bishnoi.
“We are investigating further to determine if there are any connections between Ram and Bishnoi’s gang,” a police spokesperson said.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Scare
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan, another Bollywood icon, received a ransom demand of 5 million Indian rupees on Tuesday. The caller, identifying himself as “Hindustani,” threatened to kill the actor unless the amount was paid.
The caller contacted the local Bandra police station near Shah Rukh’s residence, as he did not have the actor’s phone number.
Security Beefed Up
Following the threats, Shah Rukh’s security has been upgraded. In 2023, his protection was already heightened due to concerns over his films Pathaan and Jawan.
Lawrence Bishnoi’s Shadow
Lawrence Bishnoi’s name has been linked to several high-profile crimes, including the murder of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in 2022. He is also suspected of masterminding the killing of Mumbai politician Baba Siddique, a close associate of Salman Khan.
Bollywood on High Alert
The recent threats have sent shockwaves through the Bollywood community, prompting calls for increased security measures.
Police Assurance
Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar reassured the public that authorities are taking the threats seriously.
“We are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and all members of the film fraternity,” Phansalkar stated.
As investigations continue, the Bollywood community remains on high alert, awaiting justice and reassurance that their stars are protected.
