In a shocking incident, a 57-year-old businessman, Sunil Jain, was shot dead by two bike-borne men in Delhi’s Shahdara district on Saturday morning. The attack took place in the Farsh Bazar area when Jain, a resident of Krishna Nagar, was returning home on a scooter with a friend after a morning walk at the Yamuna Sports Complex.
According to the police reports, the assailants fired at least seven to eight bullets at Jain. The witnesses reported that the attackers first distracted Jain by telling him that he had dropped his phone and then asked for his name. In the next second, one of the masked men got down from the bike and started firing despite Jain begging them not to shoot. The whole incident took place within two to three minutes, with little time for intervention.
Jain’s family has confirmed that he had no known rivalry or disputes, and was a well-respected utensils business owner in the locality. The police are probing the motive behind the attack and have launched a manhunt to catch the culprits.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shahdara confirmed that the crime team has reached the spot and further investigations are being carried out.
Another Incident in Govindpuri
In another incident, a neighbourhood dispute over the use of a common toilet in Delhi’s Govindpuri area turned violent on Friday night. The accused, identified as Bikham Singh, stabbed three neighbors with a kitchen knife during the altercation.
Of the victims, Sudheer died, while Prem (22) and Sagar (20) are battling life-threatening injuries at a hospital in a local town. The deadly nature of the attack shocked the community over the gruesome mode of the crime.
Political Reactions
Rising violence in the capital over recent days has set off a political firestorm. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has blamed BJP for the deterioration in law and order in the capital.
Kejriwal, in a series of posts on social media platform X, accused the BJP of creating a fearless atmosphere for criminals. He pointed to the accountability of the Delhi Police under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, suggesting that the Centre has failed to address the rising crime in the city.
“After the firing in Vishwas Nagar, now news of stabbing is coming from Govindpuri. Under the BJP rule, criminals have become completely fearless,” Kejriwal said. He further added that the BJP is “no longer” capable of managing law and order in Delhi, highlighting the party’s alleged negligence as a crucial issue ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Growing Worries
These incidents highlight an increasing concern among the residents of Delhi about safety and security. Citizens are demanding better law enforcement measures and greater initiative from the authorities to stop such crimes.
As the police are investigating the incidents, these have heightened demands for accountability and reforms in the law and order of Delhi. The city waits for answers and immediate action to regain public confidence in its safety measures.
With the capital preparing for elections, the crime control and public safety agenda will likely dominate political speech, with AAP intensifying its criticism of the BJP-led Centre over the way it handled Delhi’s law and order situation.
