In a chilling incident late Sunday night, a 21-year-old woman was brutally murdered by a sales executive from a private bank in Sangli after she rejected his marriage proposal. The crime, which occurred near her shared rented accommodation in Ambethan village, has sent shockwaves through the community. The accused, Aviraj Kharat (22), was apprehended within six hours of the incident near Karad on the Pune-Bengaluru highway. The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch team recovered three cell phones from Kharat, including the victim’s. Both Kharat and the victim hailed from Valva tehsil in Sangli district and had been classmates during their engineering diploma course. The victim, who worked for a private company in Mahalunge MIDC, had turned down Kharat’s proposal due to her parents’ opposition.
While speaking to ‘True to Life’, Crime Branch Inspector of Pimpri Chinchwad, Shailesh Gaikwad shared, “Victim and the accused belong to the ame village and they used to know each other. Avijit Kharat wanted to marry the victim and she was ignoring him. The Accused thought that she had an affair with someone else so he killed the girl.”
On asking from ‘True to Life’, Inspector Gaikwad said, “That day the accused continued messaging the girl and he felt nothing will work.”
Gruesome Details of the Crime
According to Pimpri Chinchwad Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shivaji Pawar, the victim’s roommate recounted that Kharat attempted to forcibly enter their room around 11 PM on Sunday. When he was stopped, he snatched the victim’s cell phone and insisted she come out to speak with him alone. The victim complied, but the conversation took a deadly turn a few metres away from their residence.
DCP Pawar detailed the horrifying scene discovered by the victim’s roommate and other residents: “They became suspicious when they saw Kharat running away and noticed the victim was not returning. They found her lying in a pool of blood, with her throat slit and multiple stab wounds in her stomach.” Despite efforts to save her, the victim succumbed to her injuries at a nearby private hospital.
Swift Police Action
The police acted swiftly upon receiving the information. A team was immediately dispatched to Sangli, while another team reviewed CCTV footage from the crime scene. Although Kharat had turned off the victim’s cell phone, the police tracked his motorcycle, which led them to his location.
Crime branch inspector Gaikwad described the pursuit: “We received information about the suspect’s bike heading towards Karad. Our team chased him, and when we intercepted his bike, Kharat tried to escape by driving his two-wheeler at one of our constables, who suffered minor injuries. However, our team successfully overpowered Kharat.”
On asking he answered TTL, “The constable is in stable condition right now. No additional charge is getting on this injury.”
Legal Proceedings
Kharat has been handed over to the Mahalunge MIDC police and is facing charges under sections 103 (1) for murder and 351 for criminal intimidation of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita. The community mourns the loss of a young woman whose life was cut short by a heinous act of violence. The incident underscores the critical need for addressing issues related to gender-based violence and ensuring the safety of women.
Authorities urge anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.
