Young Delhi Cop Killed in Line of Duty; Suspects Nabbed, Hunt On for Third

In a tragic incident, a young Delhi Police head constable, Kiranpal Singh, 28, was stabbed to death while on patrol duty in Govindpuri during the early hours of Saturday. The incident underscores the increasing danger faced by law enforcement officers as they strive to maintain public safety.

The attack occurred around 4:45 a.m. when Singh spotted three intoxicated men acting suspiciously near Street Number 13 at Sant Ravidas Marg. The officer confronted them, asked for identification, and attempted to check a mobile phone they were concealing. The men resisted, and a scuffle ensued, during which one of them, identified as Rocky, stabbed Singh twice—once in the lungs and once near the abdomen. The men fled the scene, leaving the officer bleeding profusely.

Patrolling Cut Short by Tragedy
When Singh failed to return to the police station by 5 a.m., his colleague, Constable Sunil, tried to reach him by phone. Receiving no response, Sunil set out to find him and discovered Singh lying unconscious on the roadside. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Ravi Kumar Singh confirmed that the police immediately launched a manhunt for the suspects. Reviewing CCTV footage revealed one of the accused fleeing the scene, which led the police to Deepak, 21, a resident of DDA flats in Govindpuri.

Swift Arrests, But Hunt Continues
A team led by DCP (Crime) Sanjay Sain apprehended Deepak, who resisted arrest and fired at officers. Police retaliated, injuring him in the leg before taking him into custody. Another suspect, Krish, 18, was also arrested. The third accused, Raghav alias Rocky, remains absconding, and efforts are ongoing to locate him.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspects had attended a birthday party earlier and were wandering the area after an altercation at the gathering. They reportedly planned to visit a tea stall when they encountered Singh. Police said the suspects are known petty thieves, and their social media accounts revealed incriminating evidence, including photos of them posing with weapons.

Residents Raise Concerns
The incident has left the Govindpuri community shocked and questioning the state of law and order in the area. Residents report rampant public drinking, drug abuse, and theft, with encroachments exacerbating the situation. Despite the presence of a police booth merely 200 meters away, locals claim that the area is poorly patrolled, making it a hotspot for criminal activities.

One resident lamented, “This area turns into a haven for drunkards and drug users at night. Such incidents are inevitable without regular police intervention.”

A Grim Reminder
This is the second on-duty cop killing in two months. In a similar incident, a police officer in Nangloi was killed by an illegal liquor supplier. These attacks highlight the perilous conditions under which police officers operate, often with inadequate support and in high-risk areas.

The sacrifice of Head Constable Kiranpal Singh has brought attention to the pressing need for stricter law enforcement and increased police presence in crime-prone areas. As the police intensify their efforts to apprehend the remaining suspect, the tragic loss serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who uphold the law.
