A 36-year-old techie professional in Bengaluru allegedly killed his wife, stuffed her body in a suitcase and fled to Pune, where he later attempted suicide. The incident took place in Bengaluru’s Doddakannahalli area. The victim has been identified as Gauri Anil Sambekar, 32, while the accused has been named Rakesh Rajendra Khedekar. The couple, who hail from Maharashtra, had been living in Bengaluru for the past year.According to reports, the two were having dinner on Wednesday night when they started arguing. Gauri allegedly threw a knife at Rakesh, injuring him. In response, Rakesh also attacked her with the same knife, killing her on the spot. The heinous crime came to light on Thursday when Gauri’s body was found packed in a suitcase at their home. According to initial forensic analysis, the victim was stabbed multiple times on her neck and abdomen, and her body was later cut into eight to ten pieces and hidden.Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Sara Fatima said, “The couple hailed from Maharashtra and had shifted to Bengaluru a year ago.The house owner called the police control room after the body was found in the suitcase. The woman has completed her graduation in mass media, and the accused husband worked in a private firm. He was working from home.”Rakesh allegedly called Gauri’s parents after committing the crime and confessed his crime over the phone. Alarmed by the confession, the parents immediately informed the Maharashtra police, who in turn alerted their counterparts in Karnataka.Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayanand said, “Marital discord appears to be the primary reason behind the murder.”Rakesh fled Bengaluru after the crime and was tracked down in Pune through a coordinated operation involving call detail records and digital surveillance. He was found unconscious, having consumed poison in an attempt to take his own life. He is currently admitted in a hospital in Pune. As Rakesh’s condition has stabilised, a police team from Bengaluru has left for Pune to take him back to the city.A senior police officer said that Rakesh is acting as if he is mentally disturbed. But we suspect that it is not so. He is absolutely fine and just wants to get people’s sympathy by acting. He is misleading the police. It seems that he brought Gauri to Bengaluru with the plan to kill her.Rakesh wanted to go to Mumbai and meet his parents. He switched off his phone before leaving the city. He switched his phone back on on the way to Pune. He called Gauri’s brother Ganesh Anil Sambrekar at around 4 pm and told him that he had killed Gauri. Then he switched off his phone. Gauri’s brother informed the local police in Maharashtra, who informed Bengaluru police inspector BG Kumaraswamy. A team was sent to locate the house.Rakesh’s father is Gauri’s maternal uncle. Gauri studied while staying at Rakesh’s house. The two fell in love and were in a live-in relationship for four years. They got married two years ago against the wishes of Gauri’s family.Talking on this topic a renowned lawyer surbhi shreya said” In crimes like this, where a man killed his wife and then attempted suicide, several legal and social aspects come into play. First, the accused will be charged with murder, which is a serious offence under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This section carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. Along with the murder charge, attempting suicide (Section 309) is also a crime, and though he may get a reprieve if he fails to attempt suicide, he will still be subjected to a mental state examination.
