America is taking initiative to make Greenland its part. Now Russian President Vladimir Putin has also put forth his view on this issue. According to Putin, it is not surprising that America is talking about making Greenland its part. There have been many times in history when America has tried to make it its part or has shown interest.Speaking at a conference in the Arctic port of Murmansk, Putin said that the United States first considered a plan to gain control over Greenland in the 19th century. But then things did not work out. Later, after the Second World War, they tried to buy it from Denmark, but even then they could not succeed. The Russian president said that US President Donald Trump’s talk of including Greenland in America may surprise you at first glance, but there is nothing surprising in it. It is wrong to believe that the current US administration is saying something new. The United States will clearly continue to occupy Greenland to keep its economic interests and military-political interests in order in the Arctic region.Greenland became the center of attraction of the world when the current US President, Donald Trump, offered to make it a part of the United States. European countries were very angry after this statement of Trump. Actually, Trump said that America should control the mineral resources of Greenland, which comes under its fellow NATO member country, in some form or the other. Apart from this, Greenland also has its own strategic importance. Both China and Russia want to capture the natural resources and waterways of this region.Currently, US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, have gone on a visit to Greenland. But this trip was cut short after the natives there protested against this visit.Talking on this topic, Shrutika Jain, a political analyst who works at Bluekraft, said, “Greenland’s strategic position and resources can be beneficial for America. It is located on the shortest route from Europe to North America, which is important for the US ballistic missile warning system. The United States has expressed interest in expanding its existing military presence on the island, including installing radar to monitor the waters between the island, Iceland, and Britain, which are a gateway for Russian naval ships and nuclear submarines.”The island’s capital, Nuuk, is closer to New York than the Danish capital, Copenhagen, and is rich in minerals, oil, and natural gas, but development has been slow, and there has been very limited US investment in the mining sector. Mining companies operating in Greenland are mostly Australian, Canadian, or British. The US military maintains a permanent presence at Pitufik airbase in Greenland’s northwest.Under a 1951 agreement between the United States and Denmark, the US was given the right to move freely in Greenland and build military bases, provided Denmark and Greenland were informed.According to Kristian Soby Kristensen, senior researcher at the Center for Military Studies at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark has historically supported the US because Copenhagen does not have the capacity to defend Greenland, and the US has guaranteed Denmark’s security through NATO.Relations between Greenland and Denmark have been strained following revelations of historical mistreatment of Greenlandians during colonial rule. However, Trump’s interest in making the island part of the US has prompted Denmark to speed up work to improve relations with Greenland.
