India and China Reset Ties: Agreement on Direct Flights, Visas, and Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

India and China have agreed to resume direct flights, visas, and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage for Indian nationals, marking a significant thaw in bilateral relations. This development comes three months after the two nations negotiated an end to the military standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).The decision was made during a meeting between Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong in Beijing. The two sides also agreed to resume dialogue on trans-border rivers and sharing of hydrological data, which China had withheld for years. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the technical officials and relevant mechanisms would meet to take forward plans to resume direct flights between India and China, as well as the Mansarovar Pilgrimage in the summer of 2025.The MEA also announced that the India-China Expert Level Mechanism would discuss the resumption of provision of hydrological data and other cooperation pertaining to trans-border rivers. Additionally, the two sides would facilitate people-to-people exchanges, including media and think tank interactions. The resumption of direct flights and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage is expected to boost tourism and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations. The pilgrimage, which is considered sacred by Hindus, has been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the military standoff at the LAC.The agreement to resume dialogue on trans-border rivers and sharing of hydrological data is also significant, as it addresses a long-standing concern of India. China has been withholding hydrological data on the Brahmaputra river, which flows from Tibet to India, citing concerns over national security. The meeting between Misri and Sun Weidong also discussed economic and trade issues, including the resumption of trade in pharmaceutical ingredients and high-technology exports. The two sides agreed to promote long-term policy transparency and predictability in economic and trade areas. The agreement to resume direct flights, visas, and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage is a significant step forward in India-China relations, which have been strained since the military standoff at the LAC in 2020. The two nations have been engaged in diplomatic efforts to resolve their differences and restore bilateral relations. Here’s a reaction from an air hostess :“ India and China, two nations that have had their fair share of tensions in recent years, have agreed to resume direct flights, visas, and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage. As an air hostess, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that travel restrictions can have on people’s lives. I recall the countless passengers I’ve met over the years who’ve been traveling to China for business, leisure, or to visit family and friends. The suspension of direct flights has not only caused inconvenience but also affected trade and commerce between the two nations. But it’s not just about the passengers. As a crew member, I’ve also felt the effects of reduced flights and travel restrictions. Fewer flights mean fewer working hours, and that can be tough on our families and finances. So, when I heard the news about the resumption of direct flights, I felt a sense of relief and excitement. It’s not just about the extra flights and working hours; it’s about reconnecting with the people and cultures that make our job so rewarding.I remember my first flight to China. We had a full load of passengers, and the energy on board was electric. As we touched down in Shanghai, I felt a sense of wonder and excitement. The sheer scale and grandeur of the city took my breath away.Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of flying to several destinations in China, each with its unique culture, history, and landscapes. From the stunning natural beauty of Guilin to the vibrant streets of Beijing, every trip has been an unforgettable experience.I recall the countless passengers I’ve met who’ve shared their stories, traditions, and customs with me. From the Chinese businessman who taught me how to make traditional dumplings to the Indian student who shared his experiences of studying in China, every interaction has been a valuable learning experience. As I looked out the window of our aircraft, watching the sun rise over the Indian landscape, I felt a sense of hope and optimism. Maybe, just maybe, this is the start of a new chapter in India-China relations, one that’s marked by greater understanding, cooperation, and mutual respect. As we began our descent into Mumbai, I took a moment to reflect on the news. It’s not just about the resumption of direct flights; it’s about the possibilities that come with it. More flights, more passengers, more stories, and more experiences. As I welcomed passengers on board our next flight, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. What new stories will we hear? What new experiences will we have? The world is full of possibilities, and as an air hostess, I feel privileged to be a part of it.” – Trisha In a statement, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the two sides should “seize the opportunity to move toward each other, explore more substantive initiatives, and commit themselves to mutual understanding, mutual support, and mutual achievement.”Wang also emphasized the importance of improving and developing China-India ties, saying that it was in the “fundamental interest” of both nations, as well as for the Global South or developing countries. The resumption of direct flights, visas, and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage is expected to have a positive impact on bilateral relations and promote people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
