From Social Worker to Storyteller: The Inspiring Journey of Wildlife Photographer N. Dhiraj Singha

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and N. Dhiraj Singha is living proof. This wildlife photographer wasn’t always behind the lens. Dhiraj says that he contributed to the relief efforts during the 2008 Bihar flood and the 2013 Uttarakhand natural disaster. Even after this, he worked in many different companies. But something was missing. He craved an outlet for his creativity and a chance to connect with nature.

Enter a fashion photographer friend who sparked Dhiraj’s interest in photography. The problem? Limited funds. A camera hunt in Delhi ended in disappointment, but Dhiraj refused to give up. He honed his skills by attending workshops and volunteering for natural disaster relief efforts. It was during a trip to Assam’s breathtaking landscapes that the opportunity finally arose. After scouring ten shops in Guwahati, Dhiraj found his perfect match: a Nikon camera.

His initial clicks impressed friends and family, and soon, his photos found a home on social media. But for Dhiraj, it was about more than likes and followers. He aspired to be a visual storyteller, capturing the essence of his subjects through his lens. That’s where wildlife photography stole his heart.

Through his camera, Dhiraj witnessed the magic of the wild – the hunt, the play, the very act of survival. He learned valuable lessons not just about photography, but also about nature itself. Patience, focus, and a deep respect for the environment became his guiding principles.

Dhiraj’s message to aspiring photographers is simple: Don’t get hung up on fancy equipment. The most powerful tool is your vision. Think about the story you want to tell and the emotion you want to evoke. Let your photos become windows into the world you see, sparking wonder and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.

So, the next time you look at a wildlife photograph, remember the dedication and passion that goes into capturing that perfect moment. And who knows, it might inspire you to find your own story to tell, behind the lens or otherwise.
