Boeing lays off 180 Indian employees

US aircraft manufacturer Boeing has laid off 180 employees of its Engineering Technology Center in Bengaluru as part of its plan to reduce the number of employees globally. A source gave this information. Boeing, which is facing many challenges globally, has about 7,000 employees in India. India is a major market for the company. According to the information available on the company’s website, Boeing purchases about $1.25 billion annually from more than 300 suppliers in India.Last year, Boeing announced layoffs of about 10 percent of its employees globally. A source familiar with the matter said that as part of the reduction in the number of employees globally, Boeing has laid off 180 employees of its Boeing India Engineering Technology Center in Bengaluru in the December quarter of 2024. There has been no official statement from Boeing in this regard.Talking on this topic, Vishal Mehta, a business and risk analyst who works at EY, said, “In India, this reduction has been comparatively limited, and the company’s entire focus is on maintaining customer service, safety, and quality standards. The Boeing India Engineering and Technology Center (BIETC), located in Bengaluru and Chennai, works on complex and advanced aerospace projects. According to the company’s website, its engineering and technology campus in Bengaluru is one of its largest investment units outside the US. Hence the company will ensure it doesn’t lose its stake in the Indian market or attract negative marketing through mass layoffs. Any assumptions without the official statement from the company’s end wouldn’t help us create a clear picture of the company’s strategy. As a risk analyst, I think the steps are not just a superficial move but a strategic move on the company’s end to bring about some revolutionary change in its operational strategy to meet market challenges.”The source said that the company is trying to ensure that this layoff does not affect its operations with its customers and the government. In view of this, the company has made strategic adjustments, which have affected a limited number of positions. The Boeing India Engineering and Technology Center (BIETC) in Bengaluru and Chennai performs complex modern aeronautical work. The engineering and technology campus in Bengaluru is one of the company’s largest investments outside the US.Boeing is an American multinational company, one of the world’s largest aerospace and defense technology companies. Its main business is centered around aircraft manufacturing, defense systems, space technology, and related services. The Boeing Company has its corporate headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. The company’s chairman and CEO is Dennis Muilenburg. Boeing is divided into five primary divisions: Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA); Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS); Engineering, Operations & Technology; Boeing Capital; and Boeing Shared Services Group.Boeing is the largest US exporter (by dollar value) and serves customers in more than 150 countries. Its sales in 2021 were $62.3 billion, and it was ranked 54th on the Fortune 500 list. In recent years, problems such as the 737 MAX crashes (2018–2019) and production delays have affected its business and reputation. Even in 2019, Boeing’s global reputation, commercial business, and financial ratings remained frozen worldwide following two fatal crashes of the 737 MAX in late 2018 and early 2019.
