Former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner and fugitive Lalit Modi’s Vanuatu citizenship will be cancelled. Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat has ordered the Citizenship Commission to cancel the passport issued to Lalit Modi.According to the Vanuatu Daily Post report, this decision has been taken on the basis of reports that claimed that Lalit Modi is trying to avoid extradition to India. Many reports were published in the international media regarding this.The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) statement said that Interpol had twice refused to issue an alert against Lalit Modi. Due to this, his passport application was not rejected. Even after checking his background, he was not found guilty of any crime.After taking Vanuatu citizenship, Lalit Modi had applied to surrender his Indian passport. The Ministry of External Affairs had said on March 7 that Lalit had deposited his passport at the Indian High Commission in London.Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “Lalit Modi has taken Vanuatu citizenship. We will continue to pursue the case against him according to the law.”.Posting X on March 8, Lalit Modi wrote, “There is no case pending against me in any court of India. This is just the imagination of the media. It has been 15 years, but they still say that they are after me.”.Lalit Modi was accused of corruption in 2010, after which he fled to London. Lalit Modi tried his hardest to get the best out of the passport program, however since the Indian government is constantly trying to catch the fugitive, his move to abandon Indian citizens for good couldn’t be completed”. Lalit Modi was the President of the Rajasthan Cricket Association from 2005 to 2009. In 2008 he started IPL. The BCCI made him the chairman and commissioner of IPL.In 2010, Lalit was accused of corruption in IPL. Lalit had given the IPL contract worth Rs 425 crore to the Mauritius company World Sports. Modi was accused of taking a commission of Rs 125 crore. It was also said that he adopted unfair means during the auction of two new teams.In 2010, BCCI suspended Lalit immediately after the final of the third season of IPL. In 2010 itself, citing threats from the underworld, Lalit Modi fled from India to London. ED issued a ‘Blue Corner’ notice against him. His passport was also cancelled.In 2011, BCCI formed an inquiry committee headed by Arun Jaitley. Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia and then BCCI President N. Srinivasan were its members. In 2012, Lalit Modi said that he helped Srinivasan in bringing England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff to CSK in the 2009 IPL.Lalit Modi is the president of Modi Enterprises.
